A sleep study is defined as a test which records data while a person sleeps. It is done in a special lab which has a lot of features. Generally, it is done in a lab called as polysomnogram (PSG) or polysomnography.
While the test is going on EEG, monitors the brain activity and identifies the sleep cycle and disturbances. A sleep specialist can determine if there is any problem regarding oxygen levels or movements.
Types of sleep studies:
Generally, there are four kinds of sleep studies, let us define them below:
Diagnostic daytime multiple sleep latency test(MSLT): This type of sleep study helps in diagnosis of narcolepsy and to check the degree of daytime sleepiness. In this how quickly a person sleeps during the day is measured. It is also used to check how often a person enters the stage of REM sleep.
Diagnostic overnight PSG: This type of sleep study monitors the general functions of the body while a person sleeps. These functions includes oxygen levels, rhythm of heart and movement of limbs.
Two Night evaluation PSG or CPAP titration: As the name suggests, this study gets completed in two nights. On the first day a person is monitored and evaluated. In case medical professionals finds the case of sleep apnea then the person has come for the second night too. In this the right air pressure for CPAP is figured out. CPAP means (continuous positive airway pressure).
Split Night PSG with CPAP titration: This type of sleep study is only for the people who are suspected with sleep apnea. The treatment is started if the suspected person has moderate or severe sleep apnea. In the second half of the study, CPAP levels are figured out to treat the apnea
What happens during the process of treatment?
In the initial stage of treatment, the doctor is going to determine whether the patient should continue his previous medicine or not. The patient should not consume any alcohol or caffeine on the day of the test as they can manipulate the results.
After this consultation, the patient has to come to the clinic. Here he should bring his pillows, lowers, things he likes to read etc. Any relative or friend can also visit you there until it’s the bedtime.
What safety levels are being provided in Covid-19?
Well, all the protective measures are being taken by the Professionals. All the places are sanitized timely with alcohol-based sanitizers. For each patient, there is a private room in the clinic. Technical guide is going to monitor the patient while he sleeps. To ensure proper social distancing there is a camera in the room through which the patient can talk with the medical professionals. Each patient is having a personal washroom and when he wants to use it he can ask the technical guide to stop the cameras for a while. At first all the sleep studies equipment Brampton may seem uncomfortable but according to the Covid-19 crisis, they are best.
The equipment used is the electrodes that are placed on the face, scalp, chest and limbs. They send signals generated by brain and muscle activity. The measuring equipment detects that and record heart rate, blood pressure, brain activity etc.
